The bestselling electric cars in the world

Nissan Leaf Plus e-car

The bestselling electric car in the world comes from Japan: the Nissan Leaf. That’s what the statistics from the last five years show us. Almost half of the world’s electric cars are rolling on the roads of China. More than million e-cars are whizzing on the roads in the US as well as in Europe.

German non-profit research and development institute ZSW (Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-W├╝rttemberg) has collected the statistics for electric vehicles.

The bestselling electric cars from 2014 until 2018:

  • Nissan Leaf 363,940 units
  • Tesla Model S 243,200
  • BAIC EC-Series 172,850
  • Chevrolet Volt 171,670
  • Tesla Model 148,080
  • Renault Zoe 114,310
  • BMW i3 108,560

We expect major changes to the top bestselling e-car charts in 2022 when big German automakers, like Volkswagen, are delivering electric vehicles designed for the mass markets.

  • Tesla Model 3 146,310 registrations
  • BAIC EC-Series 90,640
