Volkswagen has introduced a new member to its family of I.D. electric vehicles: the Roomzz. It is a relatively large SUV model that is designed for autonomous driving as well. VW has shown a prototype in April 2019, is planning to show a production model in 2020, and the production of the electric SUV should start in 2021.
VW is aiming the I.D. Roomzz at road trips as well since the range (as measured according to the WLTP standard) is planned to be 450 km / 280 miles. The battery capacity is 82 kWh. Fast charging system allows topping up 80% of the battery in half an hour.
Volkswagen has placed two electric motors into the I.D. Roomzz that can continuously drive both axles, allowing all-wheel drive when necessary. The motors generate up to 302 hp. VW estimates the electric SUV could accelerate to 100 kmh /62 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds. The top speed is likely to be limited at 180 kmh / 112 mph.
Since the I.D. Roomzz has been designed for self-driving in certain conditions (level 4) the steering wheel, dashboard and seat can be adjusted. Not only that, but also backseats can be turned and flipped in another position. Seven seats in three rows can be configured in this large electric SUV.
When a human us driving the electric vehicle, the digital dashboard hovers in front of the driver. The steering wheel has a 5.8-inch display. The navigation system features augmented reality technology that can project information onto the windscreen.
