Travelers who make long road trips often like to pack a bicycle along for excursions in city centers or old towns. Foldable bikes that don’t take much space inside a motorhome or a campervan are handy, and suitable for short rides. What if the foldable bike had an electric motor and was engineered like a sports car? The Gocycle GS is not only all that, but comes with many other innovations as well.
Karbon Kinetics is the British company behind the Gocycle products that look like modern foldable bicycles, but if you closely study the product, it becomes obvious that almost every detail differs from traditional bicycle design. The reason is that the founder of the company, who is also the designer of the bicycles, used to work for the sports car manufacturer McLaren before starting Gocycle.
For instance, the way the wheels are attached to the frame is ingenious. It is even possible to switch front and back wheels, because the gear system (it comes with three gears) is not part of the back wheel.
The wheel size of the Gocycle GS is 20 inches which is a common size for foldable bikes. I also have a foldable bike with 20-inch wheels (priced at 10% of the Gocycle GS price). The relatively small frame and 20-inch wheels of my foldable bike don’t allow riding fast, although it has enough gears (six).
The manufacturer of the Gocycle GS claims that its long wheelbase makes the bicycle steady to ride. Another welcomed feature on a foldable bike is adjustable handlebar height. Usually, it is only possible to adjust the seatpost, but on the Gocycle GS it is possible to adjust both the seat height and the handlebars.
The battery and the required electronics are hidden in the frame, making the bicycle stand out as a well designed, attractive product. The frame is made of injection-moulded magnesium alloy – the first in bicycles. The expensive material was the way to keep the bicycle light: the Gocycle G3 is only 16 kg. For an electric bike with a battery and motor, it is really light – comparable to an ordinary foldable bike without the extra that comes with electric power.
Using the electric motor, the top speed is 32km/h (20 mph). If you don’t pedal at all, the range is 65 km (40 miles), depending on terrain and weight of the rider (maximum 100 kg). Full charge of the battery takes seven hours, but a quick charge option halves the time.
The smartphone application lets you control the speed, adjust the level of motor assistance, monitor bicycle’s battery, follow trip odometer, track your fitness progress, view calorie calculator, and set riding mode for the bicycle. Your smartphone connects to the bicycle via Bluetooth.
The Gocycle GS is priced at the sports car level of electric bikes: €2,799, £2,499, or $2,799. A number of accessories are available for the bike, such as a front pannier and mud guards.
