Two new compact electric cars that are available in early 2019 have the battery capacity for conducting road trips. The Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV are electric SUV models with 400-480 km / 250-300 mile range. If that’s not enough for a day’s drive, both can be charged rapidly in 60-75 minutes up to 80% of battery capacity.

The reason why the Niro EV and the Kona Electric have similar specifications is that they are built on the same technical platform. The body and the interior in these crossover e-cars are different.

The battery capacity is 64KWh in both electric vehicles. The Kona Electric is slightly larger than the Niro EV, which is why it loses a bit in the distance the battery can power the car. The motor generates 150 KW / 201 hp.

The Kia Niro EV was taken to a test drive, and the conclusion was that it is a balanced ecar without unpleasant surprises. Long range and price point make it an attractive choice.

The Hyundai Kona Electric was also taken to a test drive with the conclusion that it drives well, and has the range that sets the bar for competitors. The price and the features make it an e-car worth considering.

  1. What is the range in real life? Is it even close to the mileage manufacturers claim? Many test drives indicate that the range maybe 50-70% of the specified number.
