Having a tent on the roof of a vehicle that is used for camping trips is handy. The setup time of the tent is typically a couple of minutes only, and you don’t have to worry about bugs, rocks or water on the ground. iKamper X-Cover rooftop tent has one additional feature that makes it attractive: other things can be carried on it.
The starting point is that you have a vehicle with crossbars across the roof. The iKamper X-Cover is attached to the crossbars. iKamper says the X-Cover fits in most vehicles, and because the product is marketed in North America, it means most vehicles available in the US and Canada. A video of another iKamper product, the Skycamp, shows how the tent box is installed on crossbars.
Once the X-Cover has been fitted on the roof, you can attach other things, like a bicycle or a kayak on top of the X-Cover. This is because the tent is in a hard shell box, and hooks for other gear are on top of the box.
When it is time to set up the tent, the box is opened. Pulling with the ladder, the top of the box turns into a tent floor, and the tent erects from inside the box.
The important numbers of the X-Cover are:
– Weight: 120 lbs / 55 kg.
– Dimensions when closed: 75 x 45 x 10 inches / 190 x 115 x 26 cm.
– Capacity: 3 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children.
– Materials: panels are honeycomb aluminum, tent made of poly-cotton canvas.
The X-Cover is a flat and relatively streamlined box on the roof that should not increase petrol consumption that much or slow down the vehicle. Many weekend campers probably forget the X-Cover on the roof once they return to civilization to wait for the next trip.
Here is the iKamper X-Cover introduction video that also shows how the tent unfolds from the box:
